How did the idea of scaling come up?

Dmytro Stryzhov planned to scale up on his own. For this purpose, Sheriff has the experience, financial resources, and organizational resources. But when there is no person in a particular city who understands the nuances of the region, the company begins to lose managerial efficiency. This development path can take a long time.

“When we decided to enter the market with a franchise, there was not a single private operator in Ukraine that worked throughout the country. This was detrimental to customers because it did not provide a single level of requirements for everyone, and in some regions the service has not improved for years. Now (as for June 22, 2022), we are, of course, only moving towards the goal of becoming an all-Ukrainian operator, but we already cover 47 settlements. Some of which have been under occupation in recent months. During the full-scale war, negotiations with new partners continue and offices continue to open. So recently, we launched a business in Chernihiv, a city that has suffered greatly from the Russian occupiers,” Stryzhov tells New Voice. link here

The security business has a huge range of services: physical security, surveillance, encashment services, cargo escort, and detective services. The most important thing about the company’s approach is that they consider everything to be a protected object, from your real estate or car to children and pets, everything that is valuable to a person.

In August 2012, when the company opened the remote security segment, it started from the “0” mark in the “red ocean” of competition of 50 companies. There were no competitive advantages, no breakthrough innovations, only a great desire! After 7 years, they have become leaders and started developing a network with this product.

Therefore, at the beginning of the scale-up, the main challenge facing Sheriff’s owner Dmytro Stryzhov and his team was how to transfer the quality of services of the security holding, which takes a leading position in Kyiv, to other cities.

In the case of the franchise, Sheriff managed to find the optimal way. Their partner is an entrepreneur-investor who has made personal investments in the franchise business. He has his own business and knows how to manage a team. That is why he has something to risk. He is responsible for the result with his own money. A franchise is a reliable way to develop because both parties are interested in the results, and this is a person who cares about their clients.

 

In small towns, it is difficult to start such a company on your own. The main obstacle lies in organizing the process and the team:

  • engineers who will set up the uninterrupted operations of the centralized security system
  • provide “backup communication channels and servers”

These stages require large investments, and not every city can find a local specialist and a company that will set up all the processes for you. That’s why there were no private security companies in small towns in Ukraine to entrust your security to.

How did the franchising journey begin?

The development of the Sheriff network began with independent attempts. There were options to build a chain of branches, but then the realization came that managerial efficiency would suffer. The second option was to start with villages that didn’t even have their own police stations, but then the issue of the lack of a market arose. But a lucky chance brought Dmytro Stryzhov together with the Franchise Group team, as he says in an interview on our YouTube channel.

The collaboration began at a strategic session with Dmytro and his top management, where a revolution of consciousness took place. In 1 day, they together with Myroslava Kozachuk formed the right strategy for business development through franchising. They determined the geography of scaling – large cities of Ukraine and regional centers that should be covered by one partner, because this will allow them to scale with the same proven partner further in the region. One city – one franchisee. This is exactly the kind of franchise where territorial franchising within one country really works.
