About the company

Now Universum.Clinic is a family business with a mission to scale up decent and transparent healthcare throughout Ukraine for every Ukrainian. However, ten years ago, the team could only dream about the clinic.

“We have always wanted to create our own medical company that could serve people in a different way, more than just for money,” says Denys Bohomolov, medical entrepreneur and founder of Universum.Clinic.

The formula for decent medicine

The idea of creating a medical company was born in 2010. At that time, Denys worked in the field of providing medical services to insured clients. He admits that he has never been satisfied with the level of medical services in Ukraine, and he wanted something better and completely different.  In the second half of 2012, Denis, his wife and his brother launched a service to provide medical care to insured clients at home, and organized first aid stations in offices and enterprises. During the peak periods, they handled about 150 calls per day in Kyiv. In 2013, international insurance companies, cruise lines, and marine agents began to contact the team.

And 3 years later, in 2016, the first Universum.Clinic appeared in Kyiv. “We set ourselves the goal of creating our own clinic, where all the necessary international standards would be met. To design Universum.Clinic, equip it, train the staff, and build business processes, we engaged international consultants with extensive experience in launching and managing Western-style healthcare facilities.”

The clinic offers English-language services, and the concept of the medical center is inspired by the American family medicine format. Medical equipment, organization of space, skills of family doctors (500% wider than therapy and pediatrics in Ukrainian formats), internal medical training to enhance competencies, communication training to build relationships with clients – all this is taken from the best US medical series.

In 2020, the clinic launched a medical transportation and evacuation service with its own vehicle fleet. That was when the pandemic began. Universum.Clinic became the official medical partner of Lviv Jazz Fest and conducted the largest mass testing at the festival. The team opened a covid vaccination station and was one of the first to start testing foreign consuls and diplomats in Ukraine, and another testing station was opened in TSUM. In total, in 2 years, the clinic conducted testing at more than 800 events and performed more than a half of a million tests.

In 2022, the location on Vynnychenko Street was reorganized and an operating room was launched. A few months later, a second clinic was opened in Kyiv.

2023 has been an organic stage of business development and scaling. Universum.Clinic created the first medical franchise in Ukraine. 

Now Universum.Clinic has two clinics, 11 years of business experience and more than 40 partnerships with insurance and service companies in Ukraine and abroad.

When Universum.Clinic approached Franchise Group, they had only one question: “Where are the other medical franchises, why are we the first?” At that moment, they realized that the first medical franchise is a challenge. But our team loves challenges.

We started our cooperation with several meetings, consulting, and the creation of a unique product in the market that most companies still do not implement – the creation of a marketing and communication strategy for the first medical franchise.

The first medical franchise

Already in 2020, the Universum.Clinic team thought about how to create a medical franchise. At that time, franchising was interesting because of its reliability, stability, and the fact that this model has only collective risks. There are no losers.

The only question that worried the team for a long time was why there was no medical franchise in Ukraine and how it happened that they would be the first to do so. The Franchise Group team has solved this issue.  Together with Universum.Clinic, we decided to scale the format of a compact outpatient family medical clinic.

“We are the first to do this in partnership with professionals in this field, with Franchise Group, and we do it in a very transparent, predictable and affordable way. This is a real franchise, as it should be, with all the business details. When our experience is proven, the question of being “the only one” will quickly disappear. However, we do not know any similar projects in Ukraine in terms of format and implementation. In Ukraine, healthcare is dominated by the public sector, which lacks transparency. We want to show how this can happen, because there is definitely a demand among Ukrainians,” says Bohomolov.

What's next?

The Universum.Clinic team is when “non-medics” together with “doctors” create medical care services. Now everyone who can should work and scale up as much as possible. The medical sector is no exception, it also needs to be developed. Competition creates new standards and improves service.  There is a public demand for evidence-based, transparent medicine.

Universum.Clinic wants to become a network of clinics for primary care and preventive medicine. The plans for the nearest future include being partners for patients, spreading decent medicine in every city in Ukraine, and becoming a powerful national network.

“We know how much extra time can be spent in our field. A franchise clinic is about joining an existing business, not starting from scratch. Networks have a higher level of trust among end users than single clinics. We believe in our product and our victory, so we want to bring it to entire Ukraine as soon as possible. Scaling our clinics to the cities and villages of Ukraine will provide an alternative to people in the healthcare market.”
